The name "Cagayan" comes from the word kagayhaan, meaning "place of shame", and was so named by the Bukidnons, who felt betrayed when the chief of their tribe married a princess from the Maranaos tribe (who you can still meet today), who had driven the Bukidnons from their lands a few years earlier. The name "Oro" originates from the discovery of gold in a river not far from the town by the Spaniards.Cagayan de Oro (often abbreviated "CDO") has a population of 800,000 and is located in northern Mindanao, on Macajalar Bay. It is a town of intense economic activity due to its proximity to the famous pineapple plantations of Del Monte, in the province of Bukidnon, which stretch as far as the eye can see. CDO is a noisy city with traffic jams and pollution problems. However, it remains a cultural and economic center, with its status as capital of the province of Misamis Oriental. It is a strategic departure point for many destinations in Mindanao.
