Sometimes called Bagan's little sister, Salay is located about 35 kilometers south of Bagan, this ancient village is best known for its many monasteries. However, quiet and with a few colonial residences, it charms many visitors. This makes it a particularly active religious centre in the heart of the country. Some of the monasteries, built in teak, frankly deserve the detour. On the other hand, many visitors come to Salay as part of an excursion to Mount Popa. It can be ideal indeed to combine the two. From Bagan, one can go to Salay by taxi, but it is then necessary to count 50 US$ for the loop. From Nyaung Oo, just next door, several pick-ups will take you there for about 3,000 kyats; on the other hand, they drop you off quite far from the most interesting monasteries, and it is better to think about the return trip... It's up to you to evaluate on this one, adventurous or farsighted?
