Surigao City, with its 172,000 inhabitants, is rarely visited by tourists. However, it offers a wide range of activities, including caving, water sports and boat trips through the mangroves. The city is the capital of Surigao del Norte province, which covers an area of some 2,740 km² and lies to the south of the Gulf of Leyte. To the east lies the Pacific Ocean, to the west the province of Agusan del Norte and to the south, the province of Surigao del Sur. The province receives abundant rainfall from July to September, but is not as severely affected by typhoons as the rest of the country. Hundreds of surrounding islands form part of this province in the extreme north-east of Mindanao.
