Siargao (pronounced shar-gao) is known as the surfing capital of the Philippines. However, you don't have to be a wave surfer to appreciate the island's incredible scenery and natural beauty, still untouched by mass tourism. Between white sand beaches, endless palm trees, lagoons, islets and mangroves, there's plenty to do. From the main town of Dapa, a road leads south-east to General Luna, where most of the island's tourist accommodation is located, close to the beautiful palm-fringed beaches. General Luna is also home to the mythical Could 9, a popular surfing spot where international competitions are held. For those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground, the island's interior is made up of dense forest with waterfalls, and mangroves on the west coast. Island hopping is also very popular, as Siargao is surrounded by several beautiful deserted islets. Finally, the island is renowned for its lively nightlife, concentrated around General Luna. Often compared to Bali (minus the crowds), Siargao has its own special atmosphere that envelops you from the moment you arrive. A bohemian, surfing atmosphere, with its many beach cafés, typical accommodation, crowds of tricycles and scooters, surfboards everywhere, smiles day and night. We particularly appreciate the friendliness of the locals and the openness of other travelers, with everyone partying together in the evenings. This is one of our favorite places in the Philippines!
