By the sea. 170 km from Belém by the BR-316. The territory of the municipality, located in the Salgado geographical area, used to belong to the Bom Intento farm, founded by the Jesuits at the end of the 18th century. The toponym, of Tupi origin, can be broken down into mará or mbará and panim or panã + i, meaning water or sea butterflies. The 26,000 inhabitants celebrate their splendid isolation by dancing the carimbó in colourful clothes. Crispim beach is 16 km long. On the first Saturday of July a fishermen's regatta is held. Strong waves make it a good place for surfing. At Ajiruteua beach, naturism is officially allowed.
