Novo Hamburgo is a prosperous city of nearly 250,000 inhabitants. Today it is the shoe capital of Brazil, a kind of Romans of the tropics.... As its name suggests, Novo Hamburgo is a former German colony. Initially populated by Portuguese settlers in the 18th century, the city developed by receiving a majority of German immigrants from the first quarter of the 19th century. These populations arrived with a know-how inherited from the industrialization that had affected Germany since the third quarter of the 19th century. Today, the city is one of the 13 cities of the Romantic Road of Rio Grande do Sul.
