The southernmost village on the island, founded by the Viscount of Malanza, son of the Baron of Água Izé, Porto Alegre was once known as the largest cocoa, coffee and coconut plantation in São Tomé. Today, its fertile land is exploited by people from Angola and Cape Verde. The others do artisanal fishing for local consumption, but only have temporary accommodation during the fishing season. It is possible to reach the island of Rolas by boat from the village. Next to Porto Alegre is Malanza, a small fishing village nestled in the riverbed of the same name
