This charming little village, located 3 km from Lamu, is our favorite! It is a 45 minute walk from Lamu-Town, a 15 minute ride on a donkey and a 10 minute cab ride. Travelers who want to get away from the busy town of Lamu, stay in a more quiet place, closer to the sea, with the possibility to walk daily on a nearly deserted beach, will settle in Shela. The village, with its small square, its superb mosque with a conical minaret, its sumptuous white houses covered with bougainvillea, and its inhabitants, is a haven of peace. Many of these houses have been bought and restored by Europeans (and quite a few French) who live here only a few weeks a year. Most of them are available for rent. But Shela is most famous for its huge sandy beach lined with dunes that stretches for 13 km. To reach the beach, take the small path along the ocean from the Peponi Hotel. Beware of high tides, which make this access impracticable. Ask for information before you can't leave the beach! If the wind is too strong, take a dhow, cross the channel in a few minutes and settle on the beach of Manda just in front of you, it is superb, wild and sheltered from the wind when the beach of Shela is particularly windy.Along the beach, near the hotels, you will find a dozen or so locals ready to take you on board their dhow for a trip to the sea at your convenience. This solution is often less expensive than going through the hotels for a quality often identical.
