Established in 1968 on an area of 72,840 ha, the site invites the discovery of the ecosystem of Biscayne Bay, southeast of Miami. Ninety-five percent of the park is a marine ecosystem; the mainland portion, in Homestead, is a forested area with tropical trees and pines. Between land and water, mangroves attract fish, shellfish, marine mammals and birds. Offshore, grassy areas serve as pasture for shrimp, turtles and manatees. Then appears a famous chain of islands: Boca Chita Key, Elliot Key and Adams Key. Finally, in the extreme East, the coral reef protects these ecosystems from the Atlantic waters.
