This isolated village, situated at an altitude of 725 metres, is home to the Kykkos monastery, the largest active monastic complex in Cyprus. While the monastery is a historical and religious landmark that attracts visitors from all over the world, we find it rather disappointing. But don't let that put you off: the site is magnificent and boasts superb panoramic views, particularly of the tomb of Makarios III. The other reason to come here is that Mylikouri is one of the few inhabited areas close to the beautiful Cedar Valley, a Natura 2000 site. It's true that you have to drive 28 km from Mylikouri to get there. But then you're halfway to the coastal town of Polis, in the Paphos region. The village itself is now almost abandoned. But there are two cafés-restaurants and bed & breakfasts run by Ilias Avraamidis([email protected] or +357 99 62 00 68). These are located close to the pretty Agios Georgios church dating from 1726.
