The third highest village in Cyprus, at an altitude of 1,300 meters, Kyperounta owes its name to round nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus), a rhizomatic plant with therapeutic virtues locally known as κύπειρος/kypiros that is found here in abundance. It's made up of four hamlets set below Mount Madari (1,536 meters). The main hamlet houses the town hall, school, restaurants and three old churches: Agia Marina (13th century), Panagia kai Chrysosotiros (18th century) and the Timios Stavros chapel (15th century), now an ecclesiastical museum. There's also the large new church of Agios Arsenios (2002) and two small museums devoted to local folklore and the National Organization of Cypriot Fighters (EOKA). Nearby, families will enjoy the Adventure Mountain Park leisure complex (climbing, paintball, archery...). And there are two wineries to the east: Kyperounta Winery and Ekfraseis Winery.
