Haast is named after the Prussian geologist Julius von Haast (1822-1887), who did a lot of research including the discovery of moa fossils. It is more of a stopover on the way to the glaciers or Wanaka. With a little time, we can make a detour to Jackson Bay, 44 kilometers to the south. As if frozen in time, this collection of a few houses offers a breathtaking view of the Alps. The Haast Pass Road, linking Westland to Otago, was only opened in 1965 and finished being paved in 1995!To effectively plan your Westcoast adventure, a stop at the Haast Visitor Centre (+64 3 750 0809) may be worthwhile.
