Te Awamutu means "the river stops", and for good reason: upstream, the river is difficult to navigate. With its 14,500 inhabitants, Te Awamutu has a resolutely agricultural vocation, since the 1840s, when Reverend Morgan helped the Maoris organize and increase their production of fruit, vegetables and wheat. Te Awamutu witnessed clashes between the Kingites and the British, including the Battle of Orakau Pa. Located 30 km south of Hamilton, it was a frontier town until the Auckland-Wellington railway line passed through (1880).ISITE open weekdays from 9am to 5pm and from 10am to 3pm on Saturdays. +64 7 871 3259
