The capital of Northland and the last truly large city in northern New Zealand, Whangarei is the economic and commercial hub of the entire region. Its port is home to New Zealand's only refinery, based at Marsden Point, and the kauri timber industry was once its mainstay. Although its tourist appeal doesn't match that of the Bay of Islands, it remains a very pleasant base, with many good addresses, a generous climate (2,000 hours of sunshine a year) and several nature-oriented activities. The Poor Knight Islands were ranked among the world's top ten dive sites by Cousteau.
