100 km from Auckland, Great Barrier Island is the largest island of the Hauraki Gulf with its 285 km² surface. Most of its territory is protected and managed by the DOC, which explains its wild and deserted aspect, with only 3 inhabitants per km² (1,050 inhabitants). Little developed and frequented compared to Waiheke Island, it offers beautiful landscapes with a coastline and hills reaching 621 meters as well as deep forests. It is advisable to take precautions before coming, especially in terms of food and cash, as there are few shops once you arrive. The main activity is hiking.
