Founded in the middle of the 16th century, the country's fifth largest city and capital of the Aukštaitija region is an industrial centre that is not very attractive to tourists from the outside. But the city is vibrant thanks to its large university, and its city centre is very pleasant with its park and bicycle paths. Panevėžys has a bad reputation throughout the country. It is nicknamed "Chicago" because it has the highest number of crimes in the country. Rest assured, however, it is not that dangerous.
