Located 8 km south-west of the city, the Site site, Ponar for the Jews, Ponary for the Poles, is an indispensable visit for all those interested in the history of the twentieth century. It is here that between July 1941 and August 1944, 100 000 people, half of whom were Jews, were killed by the Nazis. The site is now a memorial. The visit is highly discouraged for children who could be shocked by the camp's horror images.
