Here we are in the Highlands. Situated in the eastern part of the Vidzeme, on the borders of Estonia and Russia, they are the most mysterious. They may be of less historical interest, but they're a magnet for scenic beauty. The Madona region is the highest in the Baltic States, along with Gaiziņkalns (312 m). Note that there is no Latvian word for "mountain", for the simple reason that there are no mountains in Latvia. There is, however, the term kalns, which means "hill". To explore the Highlands, it's best to have your own vehicle (there are a few buses and a train).
