This ancient city, once named Tyndaris in honor of the Dioscuri or Tyndaridae, protective deities of emigrants, was built by Dionysius the Elder of Syracuse in 396 BC, on a rocky promontory overlooking the sea at a height of 230 meters. In addition to the remains of the Greco-Roman city, it houses a sanctuary venerated in the island at the foot of which the sea enters the tomboli (sandy strings). Thus were formed 3 small salt lakes: Verde, Marinello and Mergolo. The poet Salvatore Quasimodo used to say: "Tindari, I know you are peaceful, suspended between your wide hills, on the waters that are soft to the gods". From Messina and Milazzo, bus AST.
