Castroreale is located 10 km inland (from Messina, it takes 1 hour by bus with the Autolinee Magistro company), in the centre of the wine region producing mamertino, the wine that Julius Caesar himself was so pleased with. This medieval village was an important strategic stronghold for controlling the Milazzo valley. Only a tower of the royal Aragonese castle remains, and today the village is home to a number of charming little churches. The Chiesa Matrice, in particular, houses a splendid Madonna painted by Antonello de Saliba. Statues by Gagini can also be seen in the churches of the Assunta and Santa Maria del Gesù.
