In the heart of the Hyblaean Mountains, these countless caves were home to a prehistoric civilization, as evidenced by the many tombs discovered on the site. These are characterized by the presence of ceramic objects. A footpath offers a beautiful walk of about 1.5 km (Scala Cruci) and the opportunity to bathe in the spring and in the small lakes (very cold!). Bring good shoes, a bathing suit and a change of shirt. You must register at the kiosk at the entrance to the stairs. If possible, leave early in the morning to make the most of your morning. It takes about 45 minutes to go down, and between 1 and 1.5 hours to come back up, depending on your physical condition. During the summer months, the site is very popular with Sicilian families who come to cool off. Since 1990, the cave has been classified as a natural reserve and is managed by the "Azienda Foreste Demaniali della regione Siciliana", which is in charge of the maintenance of thematic itineraries. The caves of the Hyblaean Mountains are characterized by their size: over 300 m deep and 10 km long! It is one of the largest canyons in Sicily. To get there from Avola, follow the direction of Avola Antica (SP 4, road leading to Manghisi), for about 8 km, then the sign "Belvedere di Cava Grande". A magnificent view
