With a population of about 70,000 inhabitants, it is still one of the most important fishing and hunting spots for Cubans. Still too little visited by tourists, it is nevertheless a great opportunity to travel in the past of Cuba through its commercial activity, its train station, its colonial architecture in the center, its legend and the ruins of the fortresses built in the surroundings by the Spanish army in the second half of the 19th century to prevent the advance of the Cuban independence army towards the west of the island. A stroll in the peaceful downtown area where colonial houses with colorful fronts and pretty arcades follow one another (many of them are casa particulars) is very pleasant and reflects the image of this city that has managed to preserve the vestiges of its past.
