Head of the province (mohafazat), 90 000 inhabitants, about 110 km from Damascus, Souweida is a city in the modern look facing the biblical Hermon, at the foot of a volcanic massif. The name of the city is derived from aswad ("black" in Arabic, black like basalt). Its main attraction is its museum dedicated to the Hauran and Jebel Druze. For the rest, the ancient city has been covered almost entirely by the contemporary city. From an economic point of view, Souweida occupies the centre of a fertile agricultural region, rich in its apple and fig trees, as well as its vineyards. The Al-Rayan plant produces the wine and arak distributed throughout the country.Today, this municipality is also "capital" for the Druze community in the country, it is quite common to see scattered in the cities of stars or green, red, blue, white and yellow representations, symbôles of this branch of Shiite Islam.
