Plaine Caverne, just like Plaine Corail and the whole of the west of Rodrigues, is the wildest section of the island, isolated and little built. Less sandy and therefore less suitable for swimming, the region is not home to any tourist infrastructure such as hotels or hostels and has very few villages. In the extreme south-west, not far from the airport, there is a vast coral plateau which was partially exploited for a long time as a quarry. Although the activity has ceased, the site and large blocks of stone can still be seen. The ground of this part of the island is partially hollowed out with caves, including the one of Caverne Patate, which can be visited.
