In 1860, the prison territory of Maroni was created, separated from the commune of Mana and centered on Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni. The annexes multiplied: Saint-Pierre, Saint-Louis, Les Hattes... and also Saint-Jean. As far as Saint-Jean-du-Maroni is concerned, the territory of the commune was once home to the Relégation camp, one of the headquarters of the Guiana penal colony where the famous "pieds-de-biche", convicts semi-freed from their activities once the day's work was done, were locked up. It is estimated that over a period of fifty years, approximately 17,000 inmates stayed at the Saint-Jean camp. The old penitentiary is the attraction of the village.
