Javouhey is named after Mother Anne-Marie Javouhey, a nun who developed this coastal region in the 19th century and worked for the emancipation of the Blacks before their time. She founded an agricultural commune here in 1822, which was later abandoned. It is the Laotian refugees of the Hmong ethnic group who will take in hand these lands at the time of their arrival in 1978. Created on November 11, 1979, Jahouvey is today the2nd Hmong village of the department after Cacao. It has 2,000 inhabitants, mostly farmers, who supply the markets of Cayenne, Kourou and Saint-Laurent with fruits, vegetables and crafts. The market of Javouhey takes place on Sunday.
