The port of Veracruz was the first to be founded in Mexico by the Spaniards. It was not far from here that Cortés burned his ships to cut short the retreat of his men. Since then, Veracruz has always had an important commercial, historical and cultural role. Since the time of the Colony, this is where most of the goods that come from Europe arrive by boat. They are then transported to Mexico City by road through Cordoba, Orizaba and Puebla. The other activity of the region is the exploitation of offshore oil, the counterpart of these two activities being that the beaches of Veracruz are rather polluted: in spite of the heat, one will privilege in the city the strolls along the Malecón rather than the bathes.
