Tlacotalpan is a beautiful colonial village located on the bank of the Papaloapan River, one hour south of the city of Veracruz. Here, Spanish and Caribbean traditions are mixed around a characteristic 16th century urban layout. The center of the village is classified as a cultural heritage of humanity by UNESCO since 1998, for its very well preserved historical monuments, inherited from the colonial period. Tlacotalpan is also famous for its festival of Son Jarocho - a traditional music of the region - which takes place every year at the end of January or beginning of February. Not to be missed if you are in Veracruz at that time.
