Ixtapa means "the white city" in Náhuatl. The resort was born in 1970 at the same time as Cancún. The open bay has a nice beach for swimming and is also, in some places, an ideal spot for surfing (or bodybuilding). In general, Ixtapa has much less charm and cachet than Zihuatanejo, despite its beautiful beach, because large hotel complexes and luxury restaurants dominate the landscape everywhere. That's why we recommend to stay in Zihuatanejo and visit Ixtapa for a day, to relax on the beach, to do some snorkeling, golfing or to eat along its beautiful marina.
