Mascota is a beautiful village with a centre full of old houses from the golden age of mining. Little by little, the village is becoming a place of visit especially centered on the ecotourism (bicycle and hike) and the community tourism: here, one privileges the contact with inhabitants who preserved the tradition of reception which makes the reputation of Mexico. Apart from the visit of the village, a passage by the surrounding communities allows to admire very beautiful landscapes of this very old volcanic and hilly region, where corn as well as wheat is cultivated. A loop starts from Mascota and allows you to make a day trip by stopping at different points. In Hierbabuena there are three small lakes where you can go fishing and recharge your batteries at the famous tubo de luz. Further on, the very authentic village of Navidad is an ideal stop to taste an ice cream with incredibly natural flavours. A little higher up, passing the community of the same name, the Laguna de Juanacatlan is located at the top of a volcano, where you will find one of the most exclusive hotels in the region. Going down the other side of the lake, we cross the community of Galope, close to the volcano El Molcajete. If you do not have a vehicle, the tourist office (Palacio Municipal and kiosk in the square on weekends) can provide you with motorized or bicycle guides.
