Classified as a "Biosphere Reserve" by UNESCO in 1982, this protected area covers 135,000 ha at an altitude ranging from 200 to 2,000 m. The climatic and geological properties of the area give it favourable habitats for an exceptional natural diversity. The climate is tropical, hot and humid, with average temperatures ranging from 16° to 26°C. The landscapes shelter a rich and still unknown biodiversity, and many endemic species find refuge there. For the moment, a provisional inventory has listed 815 plant species and 852 animal species, including more than 100 mammal species and 480 bird species. The particularity of this park also comes from its cultural richness since 25 indigenous communities live in this area. In 1990, 30% of the reserve was recognized as indigenous Tsimane (Chiman) territory. Unfortunately, the area is strongly threatened by the advance of agricultural land and by oil exploitation.
