The largest market in the region is held here on Tuesdays. The smaller potato market is held on Saturday morning. Punata's chicha is said to be the best in the country. In Punata, where there is one chichería for every five inhabitants, one never refuses a drink or a tutuma (a wooden bowl made from the shell of a calabash)! Remember how Melgarejo chastised the English ambassador. This national nectar disappeared during the Spanish colonization and was replaced by the wines of the south of Bolivia. With the arrival of the railways, the chicha helped to revive the economy of the region after the serious crisis of the end of the 19th century.
