Museums recounting equally exceptional human, industrial and scientific adventures.
Around Lyon, we're all familiar with museums that showcase Gallo-Roman antiquities or local produce, but we're less aware that there are museums that recount human, industrial and scholarly adventures that are just as exceptional. Such is the case of the Musée Ampère, which has just celebrated the 250th anniversary of the birth of André-Marie Ampère. For those unfamiliar with this scientist of genius, Ampère was born in Lyon in 1775 and spent his childhood in Poleymieux, before multiplying the scientific discoveries and inventions that would earn him posterity, giving his name to the unit for measuring the intensity of electric current. Ampère's "house museum" has undergone major renovations and is now at the heart of a major project to modernize and develop the entire museum site (all financial support is welcome). Every year, the museum takes on a new dimension. The "Induction" room - superbly highlighted with beautiful lighting - and the "reception room" of the house - in keeping with tradition - have been renovated. The renovated outdoor barn can also be used for group receptions. Everyday objects provide an insight into Ampère's life in his time. But it's above all through the abundance of scientific objects - one of the most important collections of its kind - that we discover the scientific work of a true genius. A playful, educational approach to the world of electricity is provided by educational workshops and events. A comic book retracing Ampère's life, as well as biographical and scientific works, are on sale at the museum. A museum that opens onto vineyards (there's an Ampère cuvée) and a wind turbine. A dynamic place, full of energy.
