LA FONTAINE DE L'ANESCA
A precious watering place in Provence, built at the request of Léon Doux, mayor of the village and director of Marseille's Alcazar
Anesca, a slender allegory of the nearby Nesque river, has been enthroned in the village square since 1905. This superb Art Nouveau bronze dominates the fountains and stone basins with all her candor, carrying a jug and an armful of ears of corn. It represents the charm of Provencal hospitality. It was Léon Doux, mayor of the village but also director of the Alcazar in Marseille, who decided to provide the village with a water source, so precious in Provence. He called in a dowser, undertook the work of tapping the spring and built this magnificent fountain. To embellish it, he asked the sculptor Pérosi to create the bronze statue. The name of the patron was, of course, also engraved in the bronze. The whole thing was inaugurated in jubilation on August 27, 1905. And all Monilians can still be proud of it today!
