ROMAN ARC
Superb arch erected to commemorate the victory of Rome over the Barbarians, the only vestige of the Roman period in Carpentras.
Leaning against the north side of the Cathédrale Saint-Siffrein is the only vestige of the Roman period, the Roman arch. Before falling into the hands of the popes, the city of Comtadine passed successively into the hands of the Celts - under the name of Carpentorate Meminorum - and the Romans - Forum Neronis. A building dating from the 1st century AD remains from these distant times, erected to commemorate Rome's victory over the Barbarians. Pierced by a single arch, it features a magnificent sculpted detail: two prisoners chained to a trophy. The Roman arch can be viewed freely.
