THE BOYER PASSAGE AND THE COVERED HALLS

Street square and neighborhood to visit

It was on the initiative of a local goldsmith and notable local, Jean Boyer, this alley was converted in 1848 into a walkway covered with iron and glass hence its nickname: "the glass street." The ground floor is a succession of small clothing stores, shoes and accessories. We like the old tailor and the shoes with Italian brands. A double row of buildings in regular order. It is located in the city center, close to the halls. Worthy of the Italian Bologna, these halls are an obligatory passage in Carpentras. One will equally find a very good fishmonger, a gardener, a tea room, a bakery and an excellent library.

THE COURTHOUSE

It was housed in the episcopal palace in 1801, and was rebuilt in 1646 in a Roman style: prominent balconies, bossed pilasters, enormous ledges... It contains admirable decors painted by Romanelli in the 17th century. Place du Palais, known as "Sextier", was bordered to the West by the convent of the Ursulines whose prayers were sometimes disturbed by turmoil of the daily life. Mgr Buti wrote a letter to the pope Innocent XII on 23 August 1694, complaining that young people play ball on the place - so that the nuns and the pupils could hear the licentious, obscene and sacrileges words of the players, but also see them playing fully stripped of their clothing. So, the vice-legate prohibited the ball game, on penalty of a fine of 100 crowns.

The Hotel Dieu de Carpentras, built in the middle of the XVIIIᵉ century, was one of the hospitals of the capital of the Comtat Venaissin, with its 10,000m2 of surface area, it was the most imposing. It was commissioned by Joseph-Dominique d'Inguimbert, known as Dom Malachie, bishop of Carpentras. Its construction began in 1750, and it was served, according to the will of the bishop, by hospitable nuns from 1764. Beautifully renovated, the building houses since 2017 the Library-Museum L'Inguimbertine. Guided tours are proposed by the O.T. Registration is compulsory.

THE CHAPELS OF THE PENITENTS

Founded in 1585, the Brotherhood of White Krajina settled near the church Saint-Jean-du-Bourg, between Charity and City hall. The two-tiered façade, perched on the stands of ten steps, is crowned with a moulurée corniche surmounted by a clocher. Note the frise frise and the oculus under the triangular pediment. Still a monument of Roman inspiration. The Black Doubs Chapel is located in front of the DJC, but is now closed to the public, apart from its fragility. If the brotherhood was founded in 1317, the chapel will be built only between 1738 and 1741 by the well-known architect Antoine of German. It is firmly marked by classicism: unique nave, stone facade framed with pilasters, narrow and narrow niches, portal surmounted by a rectangular panel lined with palm trees and an bended pediment.

THE COLLEGE CHAPEL

This chapel is now dedicated to art. And what strikes visitors most is its highly harmonious majestic architectural proportions... a wonder behind a fairly discreet façade. Exhibitions are organised there regularly. Suitable for large formats, it is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places to hang out in Vaucluse. You will also find the famous "Salon des santonniers" of the city throughout December.
