SAINT SIFFREIN CATHEDRAL
Cathédrale Saint-Siffrein in Carpentras, home to a collection of statues by the genius of Comtadin sculptor Jacques Bernus.
This handsome edifice takes its name from the city's patron saint, a 7th-century bishop. Built in the 16th century, the cathedral is full of contrasts. The newly-renovated exterior features simple lines and pale stonework, while inside, rich Baroque decorations can be glimpsed in the half-light of the chapels, including paintings by Mignard, Parrocel and Duplessis, a primitive by the Avignon school, and a collection of gilded statues by sculptor Jacques Bernus.
