Avignon is one of the few French cities to have preserved its ramparts in their entirety, and you can explore them by bike.

Avignon is one of the few French cities to have preserved all of its ancient ramparts (classified as historical monuments). Therefore, it is difficult to dissociate the city from the witnesses of its History. Between four and five kilometers of stone lace dating from the 14th century surround the old city. They are flanked by thirty-nine towers and pierced by seven main gates: the Porte de l'Oulle, the Porte Dominique, the Porte Saint-Roch, the Porte de la République, the Porte Saint-Michel, the Porte Limbert and the Porte Saint-Charles.

In the 20th century, thanks to the renovation of the Palais des Papes and the appearance of paid vacations, the city became an important tourist center. The creation of the Avignon festival in 1947 by Jean Vilar will allow the development of the tourist sector. In 2000, Avignon became the European capital of culture. Since 1995, the Palais des Papes, the Saint-Bénézet bridge and the city center have been listed as Unesco World Heritage sites.

With a prestigious past, Avignon has kept a rich and amazing heritage. The capital of Christianity in the Middle Ages has been able to evolve with the times and harmoniously reconcile past and present. A walk in the heart of the city of the popes is the promise of fabulous discoveries: ancient streets, restored facades, churches, chapels, museums, medieval buildings, gardens, private mansions from the 18th and 19th centuries... The list is long as Avignon is indisputably the largest open-air Gothic museum in Europe.

Beautiful ramparts locking up the old town and in good condition. Many car parks near each door. Give an idea of what l" you will find in the city arriving in front.

c'est majestueux et donne un cachet à la ville sans commune mesure. ces remparts ont traversé le temps et sont conservés dans leur intégralité.
