Avignon is one of the few French cities to have preserved all of its ancient ramparts (classified as historic monuments). As a result, it's hard to separate the city from the witnesses of its history. Between four and five kilometers of 14th-century stone lace encircle the old town. They are flanked by thirty-nine towers and pierced by seven main gates: Porte de l'Oulle, Porte Dominique, Porte Saint-Roch, Porte de la République, Porte Saint-Michel, Porte Limbert and Porte Saint-Charles.
