The name of Availles is mentioned for the first time in charters of the 11th century. There are several theories about the origin of the name. Some say that it comes from the Gallic word aballo, which means "apple tree": Avallia would therefore have been "the property where there are apples". Others defend the idea that the name comes from a Visigoth king of Aquitaine who reigned in 418, Walia. However, the occupation of the site since antiquity has been attested by the presence of Roman ruins. Here we begin to leave the Poitou. Limousin and Angoumois are not far. Moreover, Availles wants to be Limousin while Civray is crossed by the Charente, and not by the Vienne.
