Today, this small rural commune is home to just under 2,000 inhabitants. It is said to have taken its name from the lord ofAvitius (or Avitiacus), who lived here in the 3rd century. Abzac's massive Gothic church still houses two relics that are the object of a certain religious fervor. The surrounding area is home to numerous châteaux, some of which are listed as Monuments Historiques, such as Château d'Abzac, built around the 16th century. Its large factory bears witness to the town's industrial expansion in the 18th and 19th centuries. Its buildings are listed as Historic Monuments.
