A veritable sanctuary of Basque culture and tradition, the Musée du Gâteau Basque conveys the authentic finesse and savoir-faire of this must-have pastry. Originally a dry cookie, made with cereals for the fishermen, the recipe has remained virtually unchanged over the years, but has become even more creamy. A combination of crème pâtissière (or cherry jam) and shortcrust pastry, the perfect balance of textures and flavors has made it famous throughout France and beyond. For around 45 minutes, the pastry chef-guide will make your mouth water as he explains the origins and secrets of the Basque cake. At the Musée de Sare, you can discover the great Basque classic and its family recipe, which has seduced young and old alike for centuries. with gourmet tours and fun workshops, visitors of all ages can take part in gastronomic tours! From learning how to make the pastry, through the delicate assembly of the cake, to the garnishing, the team provides tips and advice on how to bake like a pro. Then it's time to taste your own creation, or that of others... for those less adept at pastry. The boutique also sells Basque cakes, shortbread, jams and other homemade creations... The place is like a small hamlet with several buildings: the Museum, the Bodega "Tinka", the Maison Haranea with its terraces that can accommodate 50 people for lunch, and the large park bordered by a stream.
