NATIONAL MUSEUM AND ESTATE OF THE CHÂTEAU DE PAU
National museum with works and objects in its inventories, with contemporary paintings and sculptures
As the birthplace of Henri IV, in 1553, Château de Pau originates from a feudal castle built on a first wooden fortification before the 11th century. And the building became an impregnable fortress in the second half of the 14th century under Gaston Fébus. Castle of Navarre king and royal palace, Renaissance added its architectural innovations there: kitchen, courtyard of honour (paved and entirely renovated this year), balconies... The only thing missing is the fabulous gardens that Jeanne d'Albret and Antoine de Bourbon would created for an ideal ostentation to the birth of their son, the future king. If he hadn't lived there for a long time, his famous cradle in tortoise shell is still there! With Louis-Philippe, the total restoration of the unit started and continued with major work under Napoleon III. Thus, the various lives of the castle is now revealed, now national museum of Art and History. Some 12,000 works and objects are registered in its inventories and the collections are absolutely rich. The Gobelins' tapestries, the furniture which recreates the sumptuous apartments but also the paintings and the contemporary sculptures or not to the King make it famous. The French historic garden with flowers and vegetable garden contains many treasures preserved and maintained by 12 art gardeners and completes this site that continues to write its history.
