The majestic ramparts of Navarrenx, testimony to the history of this fortified town, proudly encircle the city. Inspired by the kings of Navarre, the construction of these walls was entrusted to Italian architect Fabricio Siciliano. He created the first bastioned square in France, based on the revolutionary Italian model of the time. These ramparts, with their bastioned walls and earthen shoulders, marked a decisive advance in military architecture, which was quickly put to the test during the Wars of Religion. They remain almost intact today.
