THE TOWPATH
A road where progress was made on a shoestring: welcome to the towpath, where sweat, history and landscapes still meet.
The towpath, the link between Camon and Saint-Valéry-sur-Somme, is much more than a bucolic path. Once a vital artery of river trade, it saw men and horses pulling barges heavy with coal, wood or merchandise, at the cost of titanic efforts. The stevedores would trace out their epic journey, roped to the chest, through sweat and swearing, while the captains savored their comfort. Today, this ribbon steeped in history is home to joggers, cyclists and dreamers, unknowingly treading on a heritage where progress was pulled by the hand.
