A village of 280 inhabitants before the war, Douaumont was hit by the cataclysm right from the start. Until March 2, 1916, it was one of the most hotly contested sectors on the front before Verdun. Located less than 800 meters from the eponymous fort, the village was held by the 10th company of the 33rd infantry regiment commanded by Captain De Gaulle. On March 2, having just been posted there, De Gaulle expressed serious doubts about the organization of the perimeter defense. This was followed by an appalling bombardment and assault, during which De Gaulle was wounded and captured. He would return after 32 months' detention in Germany and 5 escape attempts.
