Battle of Verdun, June 23, 1916. 17 German regiments rush to Fleury. A one-on-ten battle ensued, and thick sheets of gas filled the ruins... Two months later, the village was reduced to a pile of ashes, while eight others were completely destroyed. Since then, it has been uninhabited, and now stands as a memorial. In 1934, a chapel was built on the site of the former church. Fleury has made the headlines on several occasions: notably in 2009, with the inauguration of the stele commemorating the Herduin and Millant shootings; and in 2013, with the discovery of 26 French soldiers. Free admission.
