SAINT MARTIAL'S CRYPT
Crypt containing the last remains of the important necropolis where Saint Martial was buried, to be discovered in Limoges.
Rediscovered in 1962 during the construction of the underground car park, the crypt contains the last remains of the important necropolis where Saint Martial was buried. As early as the 4th century, it was a place of pilgrimage. A Benedictine abbey was built there. It radiated over the whole south-west and was demolished after the French Revolution. In the first room, one can admire two sarcophagi and a paved lodge where the tomb of Saint Valerie was placed. One also passes by the remains of Saint Martial's tomb. The second room (called the sanctuary) contains an important granite sarcophagus from the 4th century. In addition, the crypt contains numerous burials, Gallo-Roman walls and the foundations of the primitive church. An entrance has been built to present the site. Accessible soon after the completion of the Republic Square. Information at the Tourist Office.
