The Gironde's only intact keep, a must-see in Saint-Émilion.
The "castel du roy", otherwise known as the "king's tower", is the only remaining intact keep in Gironde. This superb 32-metre-high edifice is a must-see in Saint-Émilion. You'll have to climb the 118 steps to reach this witness to the past, but the panoramic view over the town is superb. Built in the 13th century, the keep was used as a defensive citadel until the end of the 16th century. It is used to proclaim the Judgement of New Wine and the Ban des Vendanges.

Intéressant et plutôt économique, la tour du Roy de Saint Émilion offre un beau panorama sur le semble de la petite cité et les innombrables vignes alentours.
Ne serais-ce que pour la photo souvenir ou la petite marche pour rejoindre le lieu, le crochet vaut le coup. Pour autant vous aurez vite fait le tour, ne prévoyez pas très longtemps sur place.

Courte visite tellement agréable, même en cette journée caniculaire.
La tour est très bien conservée, les murs épais, les escaliers escarpés donnent une sensation particulière. Et la vue... Magnifique !

The King’s Tower in Saint-Émilion is a must-see for history lovers. It’s the only Romanesque keep still standing in the region, and climbing to the top gives you amazing panoramic views over the town and surrounding vineyards. When you enter, they give you a card with detailed info about the tower’s history, which makes the visit even more interesting. The inside is simple and bare, but the atmosphere and the view at the top are definitely worth the climb!
