Cave decorated with engravings and paintings from the ancient Paleolithic period, classified as a historical monument.
North of Bordeaux, near the Dordogne and the Gironde estuary, the Pair-non-Pair cave is an absolutely unique place in the world since it is one of the rare decorated caves of the ancient Upper Paleolithic period, presenting an engraved bestiary dated more than 30 000 years ago! On the walls, we discover, not without wonder and with a certain emotion, several of these very first rock engravings (46 in total), representing horses, mammoths, ibexes and other bovines, and even the representation of a megaceros deer! Impressive.
Discovered by chance in 1881 by François Daleau, a self-taught prehistorian and paleontologist from Bourquais, several years of excavations and studies of the cave made it possible to establish, in particular thanks to the discovery of 15,000 objects and 6,000 animal bones, that Neanderthal man was its first occupant. The Pair-non-Pair cave was also the first to be classified as a historical monument, in 1900. A journey to the heart of History, which is clearly worth the visit: but beware, in order to preserve this historical treasure and the quality of its murals, the cave can only be visited by reservation. Think about it to avoid any disappointment, it would be a real shame to miss it... As a bonus, this visit is for everyone and will interest both children and adults: this is an excellent idea for an outing, rich in discoveries, for a memorable family moment!

La visite est guidée par une passionnée qui sait partager ses connaissances sur le lieu et l'archéologie. Le parking est facile d'accès, et la réservation peut se faire en ligne. La visite dure environ une heure, et l'accueil est très chaleureux.
C'est un site à découvrir absolument.
